I want to know if marijuana is harmful, what detrimental effects it has on the people who consume it, and whether or not it causes those people to be a danger or at least a nuisance to others. In context with other socially acceptable things that people do, where does marijuana rate among its negative impacts?
Sure, we know it does a lot of good things, and there’s a lot more that we haven’t discovered yet due to the limits placed on research because of prohibition. That’s not the point here though. Our society deserves the opportunity to reasonably know the risks of what they do, and those doing the research have an obligation to objectively perform it and give their findings without bias, while those using that research to make their position have an obligation to not lie, and to not distort the facts.
Every time I see something negative about marijuana, I follow up to see what’s being said. This is because first and foremost, I have a duty to know what adverse effects are possible and present this information to the public. Most of the time it ends up being something sensational, poorly researched, weakly linked, or just outright propaganda, most of which is to serve one malicious agenda or another.
You come to rely on some sources of reporting, those that tend to find valid information and present it with as little slant as possible. Journalists from Associated Press, a non-profit news agency which has operated since 1846, tend to be one of those sources. Then they slip out a story about trips to the ER increasing in states like Colorado due to marijuana consumption, which is a valid issue to cover, but they
