EL PASO, Texas (KFOX) —
A semitrailer carrying 23 undocumented immigrants and 256 pounds of marijuana was found by federal agents Wednesday near the El Paso city limits, authorities said.
Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations found the semi on I-10 east.
Agents found 18 men and two unaccompanied juveniles in the trailer and two women and a man in the sleeper cabin, authorities said. Authorities also found the marijuana in the sleeper cabin.
“The people inside the trailer had a long trip ahead of them, and nothing assures us they would have arrived at their destination alive,” said Waldemar Rodriguez, special agent in charge of HSI El Paso. “HSI and its law enforcement partners will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle human smuggling networks operating on the border.”
The immigrants appeared to be in good health despite having no ventilation inside the trailer, authorities said
The driver, Comothial Harper, 44, of Bainbridge, Georgia, was arrested and faces a charge of transporting illegal aliens for financial gain.
A passenger, Gerardo Aguilar-Roque, 35, was charged with possessing with intent to distribute marijuana.
