TRAVERSE CITY — A warrant search at an East Bay Township home dredged up a man wanted out of Texas on accusations he tried to disarm a police officer.
Richard Anthony Zuniga, 33, of Texas, sits in Grand Traverse County’s jail awaiting extradition. Sheriff’s Capt. Randy Fewless said deputies on Thursday arrested Zuniga on Bexar County, Texas, warrant.
“They indicated that they will pick up,” Fewless said of Texas authorities. “So they will come get him.”
Fewless didn’t have information on the Bexar County case other than Zuniga faces an attempting to disarm a police officer charge issued Aug. 10. He said local authorities came across Zuniga while serving a Michigan Department of Corrections warrant on a woman at a George Street home.
“They end up finding this guy in a bathroom in the residence,” Fewless said.
The bathroom had several small plastic bags of marijuana near Zuniga, Fewless said. He said local authorities arrested Zuniga on suspicion of possession with intent to deliver marijuana when they found he had a Texas warrant.
The case will be forwarded to Grand Traverse County prosecutors, who likely will begin the extradition process.
Fewless said he didn’t have information on Zuniga’s ties to the Traverse City area.
