CENTRAL TEXAS (KWTX) After operating for three months the CenTex CBD store is going strong.
CBD or Cannabidiol oil is a non-intoxicating substance which is extracted from the cannabis plant.
It may contain a little THC, the chemical that gets users high for instance when they consume marijuana.
CBD is growing in popularity in many states where there are laws banning products derived from the cannabis plant, such as the illegal drug marijuana. According to Sgt. Patrick Swanton with the Waco Police Department, there have been a number of people inquiring about whether or not CBD oil is legal in the State of Texas.
“According to federal guidelines, if it is under 0.3 percent of THC then it is not a marijuana product. It is a hemp product. Federal guidelines say that is legal, obviously since President Trump signed the new Farm Bill,” he said Tuesday.
The new Farm Bill allows cannabis to be grown, agriculturally.
Corrigen, who is also a psychotherapist understands how the law applies locally is still tricky.
“Just because it was made legally federally when Trump signed the law in December, it still needs to trickle down. The states get to decide. Nebraska, they can’t sell it period, I believe,” she said.
Several bills have been filed for the Texas legislature to consider legalizing hemp farming and distribution, but the only state law now in effect, which was passed in 2016, allows sales only to epilepsy patients with prescriptions. Corrigen explained that her products which come in the form of tincture, salve, and capsules, contain no THC.
