24 year-old Kendrick Sneed, a Bossier City native found dead at the Fort Hood military post in Texas in January, died from synthetic marijuana poisoning, according to the Killeen Police Department.Sneed had returned from West Africa shortly before his death causing medical examiners to perform Ebola tests. ‘Like marijuana’ substances are banned in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas but abuse continues. The constantly changing formulas make law enforcement and legislation difficult. The drugs, known by a number of names, including ‘spice and mojo’ are often sold in potpourri packages.”It still amazes me that, a, this problem is still going on as strong as it is, and b, when you purchase these things there is no ingredients listed,” says Dr. Mark Ryan, Director of the Louisiana Poison Control Center. Dr. Ryan says medical side effects such as paranoia, hallucinations and elevated heart rate can occur in less than 15 minutes and lead to death.”The issue with these substances, there is no accepted dose, so technically anything is an overdose,” says Ryan.Marijuana like substances can be purchased online, on the street and illegally under the counter at some convenience stores. Despite difficulty in enforcement, Louisiana has some of the swiftest legislation in the country, often banning a new formula less than 48 hours after it is discovered.”It gives law enforcement an edge so that hopefully before it becomes a widespread problem and we have something that’s not regulated, it’s already illegal,” says Ryan. Ryan says if you suspect someone is having side effects from like marijuana products, medical help should be sought immediately. The Louisiana Poison Control center can be reached at 1-800-222-1222.
