What is a weed? A weed can mean different things to different people. What I consider a weed may be considered a pretty wildflower by my neighbor. Basically, a weed can be classified as a plant growing in the wrong place.
Reasons for keeping garden weed-free
A garden or yard without weeds is certainly attractive but a difficult goal to attain for many gardeners. There are several reasons, other than appearance, for keeping weeds out of the garden. They can deprive beneficial plants of water, nutrients, sun and space. Insects and disease organisms over-winter in weeds growing in or near the garden just waiting for the vegetables to appear. Weeds also prevent efficient water delivery and restrict drainage while increasing the cost of vegetables and causing more work for the gardener.
Ways to get rid of weeds
There are ways to keep most problem plants out of the garden.
Remove by hand, hoe, rototiller
Actually, most weeds are easiest to kill and less likely to spread if they are removed just after they come up. If the weeds are a little larger when we get around to removing them, pulling the weeds out by hand, chopping them out with a hoe, or using a rototiller all work well.
Turning the weeds under into the soil adds organic matter to the garden, but if the plants have seeds, they should be removed from the garden. It also helps to keep the area around the garden mowed very short to keep weed seeds…
